County status and library type descriptions
Below are descriptions of the county status and library types throughout the system.
System Center
- Immediate resource for other System member libraries.
- Maintains a comprehensive collection of book and non-book library materials to cover general as well as special interests.
- Provides professional reference/research personnel and bibliographic tools for subject requests and referrals.
- Provides personnel to carry out System programs.
Core
- Provide a variety of currently useful materials relevant to main interests in their district and surrounding trade area.
- Provide basic reference materials on a full range of subjects of interest to service area.
- Provide access to System services through the System Center.
Community
- Provide a variety of useful materials relevant to main interests of immediate community.
- Provide basic collection of most frequently used reference materials.
- Provide access to System services through the System Center.
Neighborhood
- Provide basic popular materials through local circulating collections and NCKL's rotating book collection.
- Provide access to System services through the System Center.
Outlet / Branch
- Provide basic library service to communities too small to financially support a public library through:
1. Rotating book collection.
2. Communications point for interlibary loan requests.
Affiliate
- Affiliate libraries are other libraries in the System area that want to participate in limited System services.
Taxing County
- Taxing counties are those counties that levy the System tax.
Contracting County
- Contracting libraries are in counties that do not levy the System tax so the libraries contract for services from the System.
